The seller sets the commission rate for each product and funds your TikTok Shop commission. TikTok tracks the sale and pays the commission out.
The rules below come from TikTok’s Seller University pages for the UK, the EU and the US, and the payout page in TikTok Shop Creator Center shows the timing for your account. TikTok Shop is not open locally in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Türkiye, so these rules do not apply there. Where it is open lists each market with its status.
How is TikTok Shop commission calculated?
TikTok’s Seller University pages for the UK, the EU and the US give the same calculation:
Commission = (order revenue - refunds) × commission rate
Joining as a creator costs nothing, and you do not hold stock or send invoices. TikTok bases the estimate on the price the buyer pays after discounts, so a coupon can lower your commission. Those pages do not say how shipping is treated, so check your market’s affiliate rules.
Example. You promote a product that sells for £40 at a 15% commission rate. One sale earns you £40 × 15% = £6. A buyer orders two (£80, so £12 commission) and returns one: the revenue drops to £40 and your commission to £6. If a buyer gets a full refund before payout, you earn £0 on that order. These are illustrative numbers, not typical earnings.
Who sets the commission rate?
The seller does, product by product. TikTok does not set it. Rates vary by category. Social Tale reports an average of around 13%, and 15% to 30% for beauty. A seller can also offer different creators different rates, for example a higher rate in a target collaboration with creators it invites. TikTok Shop affiliate plans explains the options.
A product can also carry a second, lower rate for sales that come through ads made from your video. TikTok Shop Ads commission rate explains how that Shop Ads commission works and how to check it before you post.
Sellers looking for the fee TikTok charges them want the referral fee: What is TikTok Shop? lists it by market.
What is the difference between estimated and actual commission?
When an order comes in, your earnings show an estimated commission. The actual commission is fixed, according to TikTok’s US Seller University, after the buyer receives the order and the return period ends. The two can differ, so treat the estimate as a forecast and plan with the actual figure.
How do refunds and returns change your commission?
TikTok’s UK pages and its US settlement guide (for US orders created since 15 April 2025) set the same three rules:
- A full refund before you are paid cuts the commission on that order to zero.
- A partial refund lowers the revenue your commission is calculated on.
- A refund after you have been paid does not take that commission back. TikTok’s UK seller FAQ says commission already paid to the creator “cannot be recovered”.
TikTok’s EU page confirms the first two rules. We found no EU statement on refunds after payout, so check Creator Center if you sell there.
A product with a high return rate can look strong in your first week of sales and pay less by the end of the month. Before you commit to a product, read its reviews and the shop’s rating.
When does TikTok Shop pay commission?
TikTok’s pages give these times, counted from the day the order is delivered:
Count from the delivery date, not the date you posted or the buyer ordered. In the UK and the EU, the day depends on the seller’s settlement period. In the US, creator commission follows the seller’s settlement: with a Delivery + 31 days settlement period, for example, you are paid on day 31. An open dispute, return or refund request holds the payment until it is resolved. Once released, the money appears in your TikTok Shop wallet, and you withdraw it from there. The bank transfer times come from TikTok’s UK withdrawal rules page (dated March 2023). For the EU, check the withdrawal rules in Creator Center before you plan around a date.
In the UK and the EU, TikTok starts a payout automatically every 90 days if a balance remains, and sends an in-app notice seven days before.
What if you work with an agency or network?
In the UK, TikTok’s creator terms let a creator agency partner, if you approve, collect commissions on your behalf and charge you a service fee, such as an agreed percentage of your commission. In the US, a creator agency or network takes its share of your commission through a revenue share that you accept in the app when you link with it, and TikTok’s US guide for creators suggests a written contract that states the percentage. Elsewhere, check the contract and your market’s rules. Read the share and the terms before you accept. Do you need a TikTok Shop agency? covers how to judge the offer.
- The standard rate, and whether the seller has set a lower Shop Ads rate
- The reviews and the shop rating, as a sign of return risk
- The payout page in Creator Center, so you know when to expect the money
Rules change. TikTok updates commission rules and payout timing, and they differ by market.
